Meeting with Lawrence Tubb, Director of Music at Wycombe Abbey School UK for the Past 9 Years
Leading Tutors, an online tutoring platform connecting top tier part-time teachers and professional tutors based in the UK and the US with students in Hong Kong, has invited Mr Lawrence Tubb to come to Hong Kong this October to teach students practical skills for music theory and music composition. Lawrence has been working at Wycombe Abbey School, the top girl’s boarding school in England, for the past nine years. When he was the Director of Music at Wycombe Abbey, he had interviewed over hundreds of students from Asia who wanted to apply for a music scholarship in the school. Students who prepare for any auditions for performance or music scholarship or those who are planning to sit the A Level/GCSE Music or AP (Advanced Placement) Music Theory exam paper are highly encouraged to come to meet Lawrence from 16th to 27th October 2019. A golden opportunity not to be missed!
Lawrence was born to be a musician. His grandfather was a classical and jazz musician at Cambridge in the 1930s, and his mother was a piano teacher. “I started playing the piano at a very young age and pursued formal studies as a Local Education Authority Award Holder at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music, London before taking up a Music Scholarship at Charterhouse. Sharing music with others has always been central to my life, and working in music education is a logical extension of this,” says Lawrence. Lawrence is specialised in teaching composition and harmony, analysis, advanced theory, aural training, performance coaching and orchestral and choral conducting, he is an experienced composition examiner for both Edexcel and Cambridge.
As a music teacher, Lawrence is devoted to helping students to harness their creativity and to approach the study of music as an art as well as a craft. Lawrence believes Music, as an academic subject, can develop a wide variety of skills that are incredibly useful for a range of career options and that overlap with other subject areas. Music exams, on the other hand, are often misunderstood about its purpose that can hinder true musical development. “A music exam should be a positive experience, and an opportunity to ‘perform’ rather than simply reproduce notes on a page,” says Lawrence. He believes this is a more musical and humane approach to encourage a love of music in students.
“All children should have the opportunity to play an instrument and sing from the youngest possible age. Sometimes, the first instrument chosen is not the best fit for a child, so being flexible and open to trying more than one can make a huge difference to their level of enjoyment and progress.” Lawrence recommends children to attend live professional concerts. It can be incredibly inspiring for a young musician, helping to make the link between their private studies - working on the mechanics of becoming a competent player - and the real nature and purpose of music, which is about artistic communication.

About Leading Tutors
Leading Tutors is an online tutoring platform connecting the top tier of part-time teachers and professional tutors based in the UK and the US to teach the students in HK. All of their tutors are highly selective and nearly all of them are graduates from Oxbridge and Ivy League with teaching experience over a minimum of 5 years. Since 2016, Leading Tutors has helped over hundreds of students in Hong Kong coming from both local and international schools and they vary between the age of 8 to 18 years old.
“Since Leading Tutors was established, I’m proud to see that nearly 100% of the students who have tried the tutors recommended by Leading Tutors have chosen to continue. We do not simply pass a tutor to the student without consulting of what kind of tutors they prefer, which level of expectations they are aiming for and we also need to know how much time the student would be available” says Celia, Founder of Leading Tutors.
As online tutoring has grown in popularity, amazing resources have become available. One-to-one tutoring online can be just as efficient as face to face teaching. One-to-one tutoring online can be 100% tailored to the requirements of the student and their particular goals, strengths and weaknesses. This is a great advantage of the system and means that students can be taught by top teachers from all over the world who specialize in the needs of the child.
Celia points out “for every new student, we will follow up with both the parent/ student and the tutor as well to see if there is any problem. It makes sense for both the tutor and the student to spend one to two lessons to understand each other and therefore, we recommend the student to try out at least one lesson before confirming for the commitment of a regular lesson.”
Set up three years ago, Leading Tutors has now over a hundred hours of lessons to schedule each week. They provide tutors teaching nearly any subjects that you can name of and we have tutors specialized in exam boards including I/GCSE, A Levels, PYP, MYP, IBDP, SSAT, SAT, ACT and HKDSE. In the future, Celia hopes that more students can be benefited from the Leading Tutors online courses.
