At the age of two, some parents choose to have their children start pre-nursery or kindergarten. There are many pre-nurseries and kindergartens specializing in different teaching methodologies like Montessori, Dalton, Reggio Emilia, Early Years Foundation Stage and others. Almost all pre-nurseries and kindergartens in Hong Kong offer Mandarin as a second language giving children a bilingual environment to learn English and Mandarin. Local pre-nurseries and kindergartens use Cantonese as a main medium of instructions compared to the private international ones. A number of kindergartens also participate in the Pre-Primary Education Voucher Scheme where school fees are partly subsidized by the HKSAR Government. Outside of school, there are many fun activities for toddlers from swimming, arts & crafts, reading, learning languages & singing, kids’ gym, playgroup and active play to trampolining and even just playing in the sand on the beach.
