Embracing the 5 Love Languages
Some of you may have heard that, “The furthest distance in the world is not between life and death; but when I stand in front of you, yet you don’t know that I love you” whilst sometimes we think love between parents and children is something that words cannot express. However, the differences between giving love and receiving love are often seen. We should learn how to express love to our children correctly and let them know our love to them. Here are the five languages to express love:
1. Words of Affirmation
Some parents prefer to use positive speech to commend or encourage their children. For example, “Good work!”, “Smart! Keep going my boy!”
2. Receiving Gifts
Many children love receiving gifts from their parents. We can express love to them by giving them small gifts on some special days like their birthdays, the Children's day, pre-school holidays, etc. or have a big children meal with them after their exam.
3. Acts of Service
There are also some parents who tend to be more sensitive to the needs of their children and they are keen on helping them, e.g. completing their artwork from school. However, we need to pay attention to avoid over-helping because this will make them become more relying on others.
4. Quality Time
In addition, some parents will be more willing to spend time to stay with their children, e.g. exercising, cooking, reading story books, etc. together, creating different warm parent-child moments.
5. Physical Touch
Physical touch is also a way to express love. When your child feel frustrated, you can simply give them a gentle tap on his/her shoulder or give him/her a deep hug to make them feel supported.
Understanding the needs of your children, expressing your feelings and teaching them appropriately is the first step in building a good family relationship. Hope you all enjoy these 5 love languages above and have a warm and lovely Mother's Day!
