Great locations, Beautiful Facilities, Good Programme, but not for serious dancers.
As a new comer to Hong Kong, I was on a mission to get my kids back into all the activities they enjoyed in Australia. Seeking recommendations for a ballet school for my daughter, Twinkle Toes Ballet was recommended repeatedly. With studios in Central, Causeway Bay and Wong Chuk Hang (South Island), they offer classes for toddlers to adults in RAD ballet, contemporary and jazz, it was ticking all the boxes.
Excited to hear such glowing reviews, I emailed the school and received prompt and professional response. Awesome. I booked a trial lesson in jazz and ballet for my daughter and off we went.
We attended their school at Central. It was a bit tricky to find, with the entrance actually around the corner off the addressed road. When we arrived, the facilities were spacious, clean and light. Staff were polite and attentive, classes started on time and were well organised.
Up until this point everything about the school was great. When my daughter came out of her class she said “Mummy it was really boring. It’s too easy.” I spoke to the manager and explained that her old school was at a different level and asked for her to move to a class with the correct skill level. Together we discussed her progress with the teacher who agreed, my daughters skills were ahead of the rest of the class. The manager contacted the school director and we were advised that this school exclusively places based on age, not ability. I was told “Don’t worry, if she attends lesson here, eventually the rest of the class will catch up.”
All over.
Twinkle Dance has a great programme and facilities, but is pricey, with lots of ad-ons - like super expensive uniforms you can only buy from them. If you want to do a bit of adult ballet for fun and fitness, or have kids who want to dance and don’t have experience, this school is organised and professional with a pleasant environment in a location that offers lots for waiting parents. For expats who have kids coming from (or you’re planning to go back to) foreign dancing schools, this isn’t the school for you. Their class level and flexibility probably won’t support your child’s needs.
