The Whizpa Bookshelf: June Book Recommendations

By Beverly Sace

The children are finally back in school and are ready to continue exploring with their imaginations. We start our book recommendation series with two books that will amuse and inspire children aged 3-6 (and those even older!).

Supertato by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet
Funny and amusing

What happens when the supermarket closes and all is still and quiet? The vegetables come to life! But wait, an evil pea has escaped from the freezer with plans to cause mayhem for the fresh vegetables. Not to worry though, Supertato is here! He will use all his might and power to defeat the misbehaving pea.

Perfect for: everyone, especially boys and girls who need to get to know their vegetables better and love laughing. Be warned that you may be asked to read this book again and again!

Lights on Cotton Rock by David Litchfield
Inspiring and magical

In this stunningly-illustrated book, Heather is a girl who has always dreamed of living amongst the stars in outer space. She sits at a place called Cotton Rock, turning her flashlight on and off, wishing it would attract someone from outer space. Would she really meet someone? What would she decide if they asked her to come with them? This is a heartwarming book that demonstrates just how much home and family are the most important, and yes, magical thing in our lives.

Perfect for: children interested in space who like to delight in extraordinary illustrations.
